Piano Types and Sizes

So, you've heard of pianos in terms of grand or upright. But have you heard of consoles and spinets? Or how about a square grand? Below is an explanation of the most common types of pianos found today. Throughout history there have been additional types but these are what you are more likely to see these days.



Example of Grand Piano The Grand Piano, as measured from the front of the keyboard to the back of the lid. Despite the various sizes, all grands look similar and operate in approximately the same manner.
  • Shorter than 5'8" 173cm)...................Baby Grand
  • Between 5'8" and 8'10" (173-269cm).........Grand
  • Longer than 8'10" (269 cm)...........Concert Grand

The Upright Piano, as measured from the floor to the top of the lid. Despite having similar workings, Uprights can be divided into three distinct subheadings: upright, console, and spinet.
Taller than 51" (129.5cm)........................Upright Piano

Example of Square Grand Piano The Square Grand Piano, has a rectangular shape and is the precursor to the modern Grand piano. They come in a variety of sizes and varying degrees of ornament. However, Squares are much simpler in design and are musically inferior to modern pianos.
